Top 10 Ways to Celebrate Halloween in Your Classroom
posted by: Ruthie | October 31, 2013, 02:15 PM

Halloween is upon us! If you’re scrambling for creative ways to celebrate Halloween in your classroom, it’s not too late! Check out these simple, yet fun, activities to incorporate into your lessons this afternoon.

  1. Costume Fashion Show
Let your students show off their costumes with a costume show. Make a game out of using vocabulary words to describe the different costumes.
  2. History Lesson
Use this holiday to teacher a lesson on how Halloween originated, and about how other cultures celebrate similar holidays, like La Dia De Los Muertos in central America. Incorporate American history by teaching about the Salem Witch Trials and/ or local legends.
  3. Scary Story time
Take a break from your normal routine and read a scary story. Choose a classic by Edgar Allen Poe, or a more contemporary story – either way it’ll grab students’ attention!
  4. Lip Synch Contest
Make your students sing for their candy by holding a lip synching contest.
  5. Halloween charades
If students don’t want to sing for their candy, make them play charades for it. Use Halloween words, vocabulary words, or characters from classroom books.
  6. Share a memory
Allow students to share their favorite Halloween memory, costume, or a time when they were the most scared. A story from the teacher is always encouraged!
  7.  Use candy to count
Who says candy is only for eating? Use candy to teach simple math to elementary students.
  8. Teach healthy habits
One piece of candy won’t start a health epidemic, however, use Halloween as an opportunity to teach proper nutrition and healthy habits. No student wants to get sick!
  9. Encourage safety
Ensure your students to stay in groups this evening. If you have young students, make sure they understand the proper procedure for asking for help or finding an adult.
