National Employee Freedom Week 2014
posted by: Alana | August 11, 2014, 11:24 PM

National Employee Freedom Week (NEFW) is a national campaign aimed at educating union members of their options to leave their respective union. NEFW was co-created by AAE and the Nevada Policy Research Institute (NPRI) because labor unions like the NEA don’t inform their members of their legal rights to opt-out of membership, leaving millions of teachers and other employees completely unaware that they even can.

This year, AAE and NPRI are proud to have joined forces with 81 other organizations in 45 states to help get the word out. Together with AAE and NPRI, these organizations are helping teachers and other union members make more informed decisions about whether or not union membership is right for them.

Teachers come to AAE every day with questions about their rights and the benefits of non-union alternatives. That’s why NEFW’s national coalition is taking the initiative to educate teachers across the nation so that they can make choices that both advance their profession and align with their values.

“Last year’s Employee Freedom Week was a huge success, and this one is gearing up to be even better,” stated AAE Executive Director Gary Beckner. “Teachers deserve to make informed choices.” AAE and our state chapters have all endorsed this nationwide effort.

Read what the media is saying about this year’s NEFW:

  • Washington Examiner: “Four million Americans want to leave their union, but either they don't know that they can or they don’t know how to do so”.

  • Washington Times: "I invite union members everywhere to ask themselves if they are getting value from their union membership. If so, great. If not, there are ways out. The unions won’t show you where the “exit” is, but we will."

  • WDAC The Voice: “This is National Employee Freedom Week and a new poll released today by Harrisburg-based Commonwealth Foundation found 81% of Pennsylvania respondents support allowing employees to leave a union without penalty.”

  • Bluegrass Institute: “Efforts like the NEFW have resulted in union workers being better informed about their rights as well as giving right-to-work campaigns – like the one being led by the Bluegrass Institute in Kentucky – the momentum to succeed.”

  • Politico.com: "The Association of American Educators, which bills itself as an alternative to teachers unions, kicks off a campaign this week aimed at encouraging workers to cancel their union memberships."

  • The Wall Street Journal: "There were 14.5 million union members in the U.S. last year, so by the coalition’s measure four million want out. If they were to leave, a campaign spokesman said, the amount unions collect in dues would drop by millions of dollars annually".

  • Champion News Net: “Even in states that do not have a Right-to-Work law, such as Illinois, workers don’t have to join a union they don’t believe in, and can withhold at least part of their dues if they do not want to support the union’s agenda.”
