September Teacher Resources: Increasing Parent Communication

Parents always want to hear from their child’s teacher and to be kept informed of their progress. A recent survey said that parents were looking for teachers to share updates on their child’s progress, information on learning goals, timely notice when performance is falling, and classroom grading policies.

Teachers also have an interest in making sure that parents are informed about what’s coming up in the classroom, whether that is a project, field trip, or conferences.

Thankfully, the modern teacher has a bevy of tools and resources at their disposal to help increase parent-teacher communication and move beyond the weekly newsletter and phone calls home. Below, you’ll find some tools to help increase parent-teacher communication.

• Learning Management System – Your school probably already has a system in place. Before adopting some fancy new way of communicating with parents, check with your tech support team and see what your school’s LMS offers.

Edmodo – If you’re one of the many teachers already using Edmodo, look no further. This handy web tool comes complete with a wide variety of parent-teacher communication tools. If you haven’t looked into Edmodo yet, this would be a great year to start experimenting with it and maybe even adding some blended learning elements into your classroom.

Remind 101 – This is a great web 2.0 tool that allows teachers to send messages to everyone in the classroom and to get feedback from parents and students.

Buzzmob – Buzzmob works similarly to Remind101 by allowing teachers and schools to share information instantly with parents on their own mobile platform. It’s easy, convenient, and flexible.

Voxer – Voxer wasn’t designed with teachers in mind, but many are quickly embracing this new communication tool. With Voxxer, you can send short voice messages to an entire group just as easily as one would send a text.

FlipSnack – Using FlipSnack will enhance that monthly newsletter by turning it into a digital magazine or online flipbook. It’s designed to work with all platforms, so you won’t have parents complaining that they can’t open your files.

• Social Media – Don’t forget the old standbys of Facebook, Twitter, and blogs as tools to get messages to parents.
