Member Mentions: Family Game Night for the Deaf Community

Now that the fall deadline for scholarships and grants applications has passed, I thought it would be a great day to highlight the hard work of one of our past recipients. LaWanda Brewer, a Missouri teacher and AAE member, implemented a program for her entire school district to take part in: a family game night for the deaf community. The deaf students of Francis Howell School District in St. Charles Missouri enjoyed a wonderful evening of storytelling, games, and an overall support group for students ranging from kindergarten to 12th grade.

Families from across the district were able to connect with each other and share their personal experiences on how deafness has affected their lives. The parents of older students supported those of younger students by answering questions regarding changes in educational and social needs. Siblings had the opportunity to interact with their Deaf/HH sibling in a positive atmosphere as an opportunity to meet and play in a socially safe environment and form a natural support group.

"Having a peer group to identify with helps to boost their self-esteem and allows the opportunity for the students who are transitioning between levels/schools to meet the students and staff at the next level/school," said Lawanda. "The event also gives the storytellers the opportunity to share their experiences with not only deaf and hard-of-hearing students, but also their families and community members."

Congratulations to Lawanda for implementing such an amazing program!
