Paying Attention to Bullying

Question: What do People magazine and Secretary of Education Arne Duncan have in common?

Answer: In the last two weeks both the pop culture magazine and the leader of the U.S. Department of Education have both addressed the ever-growing issue of bullying among students.

Yesterday my colleague inquired about how I handled bullying in my middle school classroom. My response did not impress me considering that 21st century technology has only intensified bullying. What used to be a playground problem is taking its toll to the point of young people choosing suicide as their option to stop the torment.

Pleads Education Secretary Arne Duncan, "Parents, teachers, students, elected officials, and all people of conscience - need to stand up and speak out." We are the adults to whom our students and children should be able to turn for help. Whether or not we have a Facebook profile or text on our cell phones-- we must have the answers for them. We are one of their stewards to navigate an adolescent life that seems increasingly difficult to live.

In light of these devastating events and in recognition of national anti-bullying month, please take a few minutes to reflect on how you handle bullying in your classroom or school. Do you address it as it comes or do you make a preemptive strike to end it before it begins? Check out the following programs which can help address bullying with your students.
