Final Push to Mid-term Elections

With only a few days until the mid-term elections, accusations of voter fraud and bribery have been all over the news. While these sensationalized stories are hot news-grabbing headlines, the real facts about campaign contributions are often overlooked.

During the last election cycle, for example, the NEA was determined to be the largest single provider of political money. Considering state and local elections, the union contributed a combined $56.5 million according to data provided by the Center for Responsible Politics. Some estimates are even higher this year, although the final data will not be released until after the election.

Even children are wising to the unions' role in partisan politics. This week former Chancellor of D.C. Public Schools Michelle Rhee posted an email on her personal website from a young supporter:

"The Teacher's Union is to back up all teachers. The Union spends tens of millions each election on presidential campaigns. I don't know about everyone, but if I were a teacher, and saw my union spend $50M on an election campaign rather than me, I'd be enraged! Those millions could go to paying the teachers extra."

When an eighth grader can see that the unions spend their members' dues on partisan politics and support agendas unrelated to education, it speaks volumes.

What are your thoughts on the mid-term elections? Do you think the union money spent on partisan politics helps teachers?
