Member Mention: Pennsylvania Educator Supplements Classroom Library with AAEF Grant

Mrs. Sherry Crane, a teacher at Wattsburg Area Elementary in Eerie, Pennsylvania, was one of the many deserving educators to receive a national grant from the AAE Foundation in June. Mrs. Crane teaches 1st grade reading and applied for a grant to add to her classroom library for an independent and partner reading program.

crane"Each day, students spend 20 minutes engaged in independent reading and 20 minutes reading to a partner," said Mrs. Crane. "Previously, I did not have nearly enough leveled books to meet student need during these reading times. Leveled bins were empty, and many students were left without books in which they could meaningfully practice their strategies."

With the help of the AAEF grant, Mrs. Crane was excited to report that her books have been delivered and she has already seen results for her students. "Now, all of my students are able to have books at their level. They are gaining meaningful practice each day and developing their effective processing strategies."

AAE would like to congratulate Sherry on her commitment to her students. Expanding her library for elementary school students is certainly a worthy cause. Future classes will benefit for years to come!

Don't forget! Today is the last day to apply for an AAEF scholarship or grant. Teacher scholarships and classroom grants are competitive awards available to all educators. Apply online or by mail to receive up to $500 for professional development or classroom materials.
