Ms. Dina Casabianca, a teacher at John F. Turner Elementary School in Palm Bay, Florida, was awarded a $500 scholarship by the AAE Foundation to attend a conference this spring.  The funds were used to attend the International Reading Association Annual Conference, which allowed Ms. Casabianca to network with other educators and learn about new technologies designed to help students “read their hearts out.”

One of the more exciting technologies that Ms. Casabianca discovered while at the conference was the whisperphone, a device designed to help students hear their own speaking voice.  Ms. Casabianca returned from the conference with her own whisperphone, which she is sharing with her students with autism.  She reports that her students are thrilled to learn the letters of alphabet using the device, and, as a result, her students’ language, reading, and speaking skills have developed exponentially.

AAE applauds Ms. Casabianca for her enthusiasm for helping students to learn how to read.  Educators and students alike are bound to be inspired by her!

AAEF teacher scholarships and classroom grants are competitive awards available to all educators.  Apply online to receive up to $500 for professional development or classroom materials.  Be sure to mark your calendar for the fall deadline, which is October 1, 2012.
