Member Mention: Shelby Thomson Grows Literacy with AAE Foundation Grant
posted by: Melissa | February 08, 2013, 09:11 PM

Going into this school year, Shelby Thomson knew that she wanted to implement The Daily 5 reading program in her fifth-grade classroom. Ms. Thomson felt confident that this program would help her students grow into fluent readers, however the program calls for the use of listening stations for which she did not have the funding.

Believing that using the listening stations would help her students develop fluency and that audiobooks enable students to experience literature they wouldn't be able to otherwise, Ms. Thomson began looking for sources of funding. She discovered the Association of American Educators Foundation Teacher Scholarship and Classroom Grant program and applied for funding to purchase the three iPod Nano's that would allow her to create a listening station.

Since being awarded the grant, Shelby has purchased the iPods and integrated the listening station into her class. "I can't help but smile when I hear all of the students discussing the books from the listening station," Shelby said when we asked her about her experience with the grant, "The students definitely feel grateful that their classroom has been rewarded with such a generous grant. Many of them have said that Listening to Reading is one of their favorite parts of our afternoon."

We offer our sincere congratulations to Shelby on being awarded this grant and we know her students will benefit from it, both now and in the future.

AAE Foundation Teacher Scholarships and Classroom Grants are awarded twice yearly. The next deadline is March 1st. You can apply here.

Our foundation grants are made possible by generous donations from across the country; please consider donating to the AAE Foundation and supporting teachers like Shelby.
