Department of Education Releases Final Guidelines for Race to the Top-Early Learning Challenge
Following 2010's federal Race to the Top competitive grant program, the Department of Education has once again flagged an estimated $700 million for an additional round of state-level grants. This year, the Obama administration plans to focus the majority of the funds on the nation's youngest students with their Race to the Top-Early Learning Challenge. The final guidelines of the program were released last week.

"I was watching my sister-in-law struggle to write a paper. She wasn't struggling with what to say, but with the physical process of writing. She was sitting at the kitchen counter trying to type a passage into her laptop, her elbow shakily propping open the book from which she was quoting. She was forced to look back and forth from the book to the screen; she'd lose her place; the book would slip and close; the whole thing was terribly awkward. I thought, 'There's really gotta be a better way to do that.' "

While we discuss Facebook frequently on the AAE blog, one story about teachers and the appropriate use of the popular social networking tool has been gaining national headlines for weeks. In Missouri, a law was passed that barred teachers from communicating with students privately through Facebook. While the legislation was intended to protect students, educators in the state argue the rules go too far, citing first amendments rights and invasion of privacy.

This summer, Ms. Andrea Thomas of Joplin, MO was awarded a hardship grant to purchase materials for her students lost in May's natural disaster. The funding will allow Ms. Thomas to replenish her classroom with supplies including notebooks, books, and other office supplies lost in the tornado. In addition, Ms. Thomas' professional membership in AAE was extended free of charge for one year.
