Teacher Tenure in Kansas

This weekend, the Kansas Legislature passed HB 2506, a school funding bill that included policy changes to teacher tenure. Among the many education reform provisions, the state is expected to increase K-12 education spending by 129 million dollars and allow easier paths to the classroom for degreed professionals. Governor Brownback has expressed support for the bill and will most likely sign it into law.   Continue Reading...

Unified Dues: More than Teachers Bargain For

In right-to-work states or in communities where union membership is entirely voluntary, teachers and education employees often join their local National Education Association (NEA) affiliate thinking they are advancing their profession and protecting their interests, without the union baggage. Utah Issues Letter Grades to Public Schools

During the 2013 legislative season, the state of Utah passed SB721 in an effort to foster a culture of transparency in public schools. Similar to bills in 15 other states, the new law measures various sources and awards an easy-to-understand letter grade to all public schools. According to a report, 55% of Utah's 855 public schools earned either an A or a B grade. Just 14% of schools earned a D or an F.   Continue Reading...
