Teachers Rejects State & National Unions in Kansas

For the seventh time since 2009, a Kansas school district has voted to decertify their local teachers association from the KNEA and National Education Association (NEA). Spearville, the latest district to vote on such a measure, recently sought the assistance of the Kansas Association of American Educators, an AAE state chapter in order to gain their independence to form a local bargaining unit.

Wisconsin Certification Elections and AAE

Last week, voters in 408 Wisconsin districts participated in union certification elections to determine their future representation. According to the results, 19 teachers unions decertified. All told, workers rejected over 70 of 408 school district unions during annual recertification elections.

Earlier this week, Wisconsin's Dane County Circuit Court Judge Juan Colas held the Wisconsin Employment Relations Commission in contempt for enforcing Act 10 by permitting recertification elections for teacher unions around the state. The decision could potentially affect thousands of educators who have already fled the union in favor of professional alternatives.

Michigan Post Right-to-Work

On March 28, 2013, Michigan's Right-to-Work law went into full effect, finally providing Michigan teachers and other workers the freedom to choose whether they want to be a member of a union. Since its inception, AAE has seen a large increase in Michigan teachers searching for professional benefits without the partisan politics of the Michigan Education Association (MEA). However, due to the mass exodus of members, Michigan union leaders are doing everything in their power to keep workers in the fold.   Continue Reading...
NEA Membership Numbers Show Continued Decline

Following an eventful 2013 annual conference, the NEA's official membership numbers have hit the internet. According to the Education Intelligence Agency, the NEA has lost over 9% of its members nationwide. The 2011-12 school year absorbed the sharpest decline, with almost 104,000 fewer members in the ranks from the previous year. However, the losses continued by more than 41,000 members in the just-concluded 2012-13 school year.   Continue Reading...

Right-to-Work Bill Passed in Michigan

Today, lawmakers in Michigan approved Right-to-Work legislation by a 58-51 vote. The controversial saga over freedom of choice for workers is drawing not just national attention, but also thousands of union-led protesters to the Capitol grounds today.
