It seems that the Common Core State Standards and its requirements are all that people are talking about nowadays.  Educators in and out of the classroom worry about how its new requirements are going to affect teaching.  Causing particular controversy is the new emphasis on nonfiction reading; teachers worry that nonfiction will replace literature in Language Arts classes as well as hands-on learning in subject areas.

Going into this school year, Shelby Thomson knew that she wanted to implement The Daily 5 reading program in her fifth-grade classroom. Lisa Bender, a marketing teacher at Southern Garrett High School, had an idea to collaborate with Angie Meyer’s sixth grade Language Arts class.  The two teachers designed a project to expose the students to entrepreneurial concepts and to teach economic and financial literacy principals as well, using the novel Lawn Boy by Gary Paulsen.  The project was student-centered and made heavy use of technology, but it also cost funds that the two teachers did not have.

Last spring, AAE was proud to award a classroom grant to Ms. Elizabeth Eaton, the Utah Association of Public Charter Schools Teacher of the Year.  Ms. Eaton was recognized by AAE-Utah Membership Director Charity Smith at one of last year’s School Choice Week events in Salt Lake City.

Ms. Sonja Brue, an elementary music teacher at Wagonwheel Elementary School in Gillette, Wyoming, was awarded an AAE Foundation classroom grant to purchase musical instruments for her students.  With the funding, Ms. Brue purchased four tenor recorders and a bass recorder so that she could start a recorder club at her elementary school.

Ms. Dina Casabianca, a teacher at John F. Turner Elementary School in Palm Bay, Florida, was awarded a $500 scholarship by the AAE Foundation to attend a conference this spring.  The funds were used to attend the International Reading Association Annual Conference, which allowed Ms. Casabianca to network with other educators and learn about new technologies designed to help students “read their hearts out.”

Ms. Margaret Quirante, a 1st grade teacher at Joshua Tree Elementary School in Joshua Tree, California has been awarded a classroom grant by the AAE Foundation to purchase an Apple iPad for her students. The new tablet computer is being used by Ms. Quirante's drama and dance performance club to create videos and interactive projects.   Continue Reading...
Mr. David Fassler, a teacher at Greater Lawrence Regional Vocational Technical High School in Andover, Massachusetts, has been awarded a classroom grant by the Association of American Educators Foundation to supplement the cost of servicing the school's science equipment. Great American Teach Off Awarding $10,000 Grant

Over the past few years, education reform has been a hot topic nearly nationwide. While the examination of our system is prudent  it is critical to recognize the amazing work our educators are doing across the country. Ms. Ashley Favorite, a teacher at the Lac du Flambeau Public School in Wisconsin, has been awarded a scholarship by the Association of American Educators Foundation to supplement the cost of tuition for graduate courses at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. Ms. Favorite is pursuing a Master of Science Degree in Education with a focus on reading education; while both teaching fulltime and maintaining a 4.0 grade point average.   Continue Reading...
Mr. Matthew Cotton, a teacher at the Alliance Marc and Eva Stern Math and Science School in Los Angeles, has been awarded a scholarship by the Association of American Educators Foundation to supplement the cost of tuition for a doctoral program in music education at the University of Southern California.
