Since AAE's founding in 1994, our association and state partners have been met with harsh opposition from both the NEA and its state affiliates. False claims about AAE's motives and benefits, coupled with districts shutting out non-union groups in favor of the union have been commonplace. AAE members have even been harassed and blackballed for supporting the non-union option. While charter schools have been touted as a major component of the education reform movement, the battle to allow charters to exist still rages on in states across the country. President Obama Releases 2013 Budget

Yesterday at a community college in northern Virginia, President Obama unveiled his new budget for fiscal year 2013. The $3.8 trillion budget earmarks $69.8 billion in mere discretionary spending for the U.S. Department of Education in the next fiscal year, an increase of $1.7 billion, or 2.5 percent, over the current budget year.

A recent report by the union watchdog group, the Education Intelligence Agency, sheds new light on the financial disclosures of the American Federation of Teachers in the 2010-2011 fiscal year. Education in State of the Union Address Last week, President Obama spent significant time during the State of the Union address discussing his administration's vision for American education. "Teachers matter," said President Obama in beginning his education remarks. "Instead of bashing them, or defending the status quo let's offer schools a deal. Give them the resources to keep good teachers on the job, and reward the best ones. In return, grant schools flexibility: To teach with creativity and passion; to stop teaching to the test; and to replace teachers who just aren't helping kids learn."
