Association of American Educators Reacts to Colorado House Passage of Pro-Teacher Legislation HB 1333

Alexandria, VA– The Association of American Educators (AAE) joins Colorado state chapter, the Professional Association of Colorado Educators (PACE), in praising the passage of Colorado's House Bill 1333, a measure aimed at promoting fairness among union and non-union teachers and their associations. The bill was passed through the Colorado House of Representatives today and will now move on to the Senate for consideration.

"Teaching is one of the most noble professions in America," said Colorado Representative Jon Becker, (R-Fort Morgan), the bill's sponsor and husband of a teacher. "They should be allowed to enter and exit unions at their discretion, without facing any kind of pressure."

Currently in most of Colorado's largest school districts, teachers cannot revoke union membership and pay pricey dues unless they notify the union during 2-3 week window in the fall. House Bill 1333 would ensure that teachers be afforded the right to revoke their membership of any association, at any time and for any reason.

"This bill is a critical first step in ensuring equal treatment among teacher associations in Colorado," said AAE Executive Director Gary Beckner. "This pro-teacher legislation will finally put teachers in control of their hard earned dollars. I join PACE leadership in urging the Senate to pass HB 1333 immediately."

HB 1333 passed the House on a Republican Party line vote, 33-32. It now moves to the Senate for further consideration.
