Association of American Educators Weighs in on Wisconsin Recall Election

Disclaimer: AAE does not endorse candidates or support elections or campaigns. Further, AAE only takes positions on issues after our members are surveyed at a majority. Mr. Beckner's statement solely reflects AAE's position on forced unionism and does not imply support for Governor Walker's administration or the entire Act 10 law.

Alexandria, VA– Yesterday, Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker defeated Democratic Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett to become the nation's first governor to survive a recall election.

In light of the news, AAE Executive Director Gary Beckner issued the following statement:

"Governor Walker's overwhelming victory in Wisconsin is a true testament to the impact his administration has had on the politics of the state. Wisconsin teachers and the citizens at large have spoken loud and clear in favor of freedom of choice and fiscal sanity, abandoning the history of being a union strong-hold enjoying the spoils of forced union dues.

AAE applauds the efforts of Wisconsin's voters and their commitment to upholding teacher freedom in this historic election. Since Assembly Bill 11 went into effect, AAE has welcomed teachers from across the state seeking a professional and nonpartisan option. We look forward to serving Wisconsin's hard-working teachers.

Moving forward, we must recognize Wisconsin as the nation's leader in reversing the archaic practice of forced unionism. Hopefully they will set the standard for the nation as we look ahead to new laws across the country aimed at curbing union power and reforming education."

The Association of American Educators (AAE) is the largest national, non-union, professional educators organization, advancing the profession by offering a modern approach to teacher representation and educational advocacy, as well as promoting professionalism, collaboration and excellence without a partisan agenda.
