Music Teacher Starts Ukulele Club with AAE Grant

The Association of American Educators is proud to present Karen Cuen of Fullerton, CA with a $500 classroom grant!

Ms. Cuen is a music teacher at Oak Ridge Elementary School. She will use her grant to begin a ukulele club at her school. Since asking students to purchase the ukuleles themselves was not possible, she would not have been able to start the club without the funds that AAE provided.

Even though the club is only just beginning, Ms. Cuen reports that there is still a lot of excitement surrounding it. Forty students have applied for the sixteen slots in the club and other teachers are very excited about it.

Ms. Cuen reports that the process has helped her be a better teacher. Not only did having to write the grant stretch her, but she is also learning how to teach the ukulele for the first time and is gaining a new skill.

She is a long-time AAE member who has been highly involved with the organization in the past and is known for being an excellent educator. Of her AAE membership she says, “I realized that my union was not meeting my needs, and as a matter of fact was working against my needs. When I resigned from my union, I needed liability insurance and I found AAE. I have been very happy being part of AAE all these years!”

AAE awards its scholarships and grants twice yearly in the fall and spring. Applications are easy to complete and can be filled out online by visiting the scholarship and grant page. The next deadline is March 1st.
