National Core Arts Standards Released

The latest set of voluntary national standards have been released.  This time they are not aimed at any of the core subject areas but instead focus on bringing attention to arts education.

Arts education has languished over the past decade.  In additional to nearly nationwide budget cuts, school districts have faced formidable challenges under the NCLB law and pressure to increase standardized test scores which seemed to only focus on a select handful of subjects.  Many districts felt that something had to go, and arts education was often first to hit the chopping block.

Released this week, the standards hope to bring arts education back as a focus area for the nation’s schools.  They were released by the National Coalition for Arts Standards, an entity created for the purpose of creating the standards, and have gone through several drafts and periods of public and educator input over the past few years.

The new standards were designed both to be more rigorous than previous arts standards and to complement the Common Core State Standards.  There are four key areas that the standards relate to including, Creating, Presenting, Responding, and Connecting.  Each four key area is then divided into standards for theater, visual arts, dance, media arts, and music.

The standards have been published on their own webpage along with model assessments that teachers help teacher with implementation.
