No Child Left Behind Overhaul: AAE Responds
posted by: Alana | January 13, 2015, 06:45 PM

With renewed focus on overhauling the No Child Left Behind law gaining traction among Hill insiders, many educators are left wondering whether or not their best interests will be represented in reauthorization efforts. As the nation’s leading voice for professional educators, AAE is taking action by sending Congress a clear message on behalf of teachers. Here’s what Executive Director Gary Beckner had to say:

“AAE members are encouraged by the new Congress' efforts to reauthorize the long outdated No Child Left Behind law. Based on years of direct member feedback, AAE supports a timely approach to reauthorization that promotes flexibility, accountability, and a focus on local control.

Teachers agree that a one-size-fits-all system isn’t working. We must find a common ground that addresses the unique needs of the states. It's critical to strike an appropriate balance between demanding change and respecting the discretion of states and school districts to tailor policies to their unique needs.

While the law has been far from perfect, its focus on accountability and demanding results for students is vital. We must balance the realities of overtesting with a system that properly allocates resources to schools and students in need.

As the debate continues, AAE will continue to poll our dedicated member educators on what’s working in their respective states. We’re committed to a member-driven advocacy voice and look forward to sharing findings with federal lawmakers in the weeks ahead.”
