National School Choice Week: AAE Members Supportive of School Choice Policies in 2015
posted by: Alana | January 26, 2015, 05:02 PM

This week the Association of American Educators joins groups of students, parents, and community leaders across the country in celebrating National School Choice Week 2015!  It's an honor to be celebrating teachers and their professional choices!

In celebration of this important week, we’re happy to report that AAE members are not only supportive of many school choice policies– they’re benefiting from them as well! AAE is the only association supportive of educators in all settings- traditional public, virtual, charter, or private. As a member-driven organization, we’re proud to promote the opinions of forward-thinking classroom educators.

According to AAE membership surveys, educators are embracing many school choice policy initiatives.

For example, an overwhelming 97% of AAE members support public charter schools as options for both students and teachers alike.  Another 82% of our members support public school open enrollment.

Similarly, 94% of survey respondents support course choice for students. This innovative policy allows students to craft an à la carte education uniquely tailored to their learning needs via courses from colleges, public high schools, virtual schools and various online providers.

Another 56% surveyed teachers support Empowerment Scholarship Accounts. These ESAs enable parents of special needs children to leave their assigned public schools, taking with them 90% of the state dollars that the schools would have received for their children. That money, deposited into ESAs, can then be used to access a multitude of education options that better met their children’s needs.

It’s clear that AAE member teachers support policies that empower parents to choose the learning environment best suited for their child, and for teachers to have more choices in their profession.

We know that school choice is making an impact for members and stakeholders everywhere!

Don’t miss this excellent opinion editorial from AAE Regional Director Brenda Miller in the Idaho Statesman.

We hope that our members get involved with National School Choice Week this week as we celebrate innovations in education. An authentic teacher voice is instrumental in crafting policy that works for all stakeholders. Visit the National School Choice website for more opportunities to get involved.
