Hey you! (Yeah you...) GET OUTSIDE!
posted by: Alana | June 09, 2016, 04:32 PM

Spring has officially sprung and the weather is ABSOLUTELY beautiful. It's 63 degrees in Washington state, 72 in Washington, D.C. and just as beautiful everywhere inbetween.

Now is the perfect time of the year to bring education to the great outdoors. Don't know what to do? Here are a few simple suggestions to get your creative juices flowing for ways to take learning outside of the classroom...

1. Build a garden and discuss nutrition, masonry, and budgeting.
2. Research the natural sciences with a field trip to the zoo, a park, even a cavern!
3. Teach team building by taking students on a ropes course, rock climbing, or zip lining.
4. Discuss survival skills such as compassing, shelter building, or hunting.
5. Have students create art out of nature, or encourage them to practice writing by journaling an outdoor experience.
6. Take a deeper dive into social studies through a digging excursion.
7. Go on a historic expedition with a lesson plan focused on the reasons that people moved west and technological changes over the decades.
8. Look to the sky for answers in astronomy, uncover math secrets by calculating time with the sun's shadow, or explore activities such as drawing in the dark, or walking solo as a way to address night fears and how to deal with them.

Incorporating experiences like these into your curriculum not only offers hands-on learning you can't get inside the classroom, but it also provides lasting memories that seal those lessons into the lives of your students in ways they'll never forget.

Do you have great outdoor activities to add to this list?
