Member Spotlight: How Cristine Chang's AAE Classroom Grant Made the Difference

Considering applying for an AAE Teacher Scholarship or Classroom Grant but not sure how to put your ideas on paper? Here's an example of a past winner whose award made all the difference for her students.

Ms. Cristine Chang won her AAE Classroom Grant in the Fall of 2015 to buy supplies for her Florida classroom. Here's what she had to share with AAE about the difference this award made for her students:

Receiving this grant meant so much to me because I really wanted my students to start using interactive notebooks, but I did not think it would be possible, financially, to create them. I keep my own interactive notebook as well so that students who are absent can get caught up easily. Keeping a notebook myself has made me much more organized.

I have definitely seen these notebooks have an impact on student achievement in my classroom. My students are so much more organized this year. I am amazed with how neatly they take their notes in class. I have also seen a difference in their engagement during lessons because they get the opportunity to be creative by adding color to their interactive foldable.

My students are required to put everything they work on in my class inside of their notebooks. So in the Spring, when it’s time to prepare for their state testing, their interactive notebooks will be the best study resource they have because everything since the first day of school will be inside of the notebook: notes, classwork examples, foldables, graphic oragnizers, and more!

I have informed my coworkers that my students are using interactive notebooks this year. After they see the impact these notebooks have made with my students, I have a feeling they will also be interested in using interactive notebooks with their future students. I plan to present the use of interactive student notebooks as a ‘best practice’ during my Math Department meeting this year.

I am so grateful for the supplies this grant has provided me with for my students. Using interactive notebooks takes a lot of preparation time, but it definitely pays off for the students in the end!  I greatly appreciate your support this year in my classroom! If it wasn't for the classroom grant, I definitely wouldn't have been able to afford to create interactive notebooks with my students. The application, approval, and acceptance process all went great. You've got amazing staff at AAE that responds to questions through email quickly.

We're excited to announce the winners of the Spring 2016 award cycle in the coming weeks to celebrate so many bright and driven educators from coast to coast. Stay tuned to see who won!

Miss the deadline? That's okay! It's never too early to apply for the next cycle. Visit aaeteachers.org/awards to apply today!
