What the 2016 Election Means for Education
posted by: Alana | November 09, 2016, 09:30 PM

Against all odds and predictions, Donald J. Trump secured a victory in the 2016 election. But that wasn't the only noteworthy outcome at the polls. Here are a few more key decisions made by voters across the U.S. we think you should follow:

1. In Massachusetts, voters rejected a ballot initiative that would have expanded the charter school cap by 12 schools each year.

2. By a vote of six to 10, Georgians voted down Amendment 1 which would have removed local control of failings schools in favor of a state takeover through an Opportunity School District while 10 out of 12 pro school choice candidates won their races with one still too close to call.

3. South Carolina re-elected Tim Scott, the senator who first introduced the CHOICE Act in 2015.

4. School Choice advocates saw a big win in Florida where Al Lawson of Tallahassee and Darren Soto of Central Florida both prevailed in their respective congressional races and educational choice proponents virtually swept state legislative races.

5. Charter supporters came out in droves in Indiana to support their local school board elections and secure victory for not one, but three charter school friendly school board members.

6. Out of 12 gubernatorial races across the nation, at least five candidate maintaining A, B, and C ratings in the Center for Education Reform's education innovation and opportunity ranking system will be joining the other 31 states also let by high performing governors.

Here at AAE, we look forward to working with all elected leaders in the days ahead. Our member teachers have much to add to the education conversation.
