posted by: Melissa | February 27, 2018, 05:00 AM

Last week, we looked at the reasons why educators #loveteaching and stay in this career. Today, I’d like to turn the attention to what others have said about teaching and teachers, what makes this career so special, and how we can be great at it. Below are ten quotes about teaching that have inspired me. I bet they’ll inspire you as well:

“The test of a good teacher is not how many questions he can ask his pupils that they will answer readily, but how many questions he inspires them to ask him which he finds it hard to answer.”

Alice Wellington Rollins, Poet and Author

“To know how to suggest is the great art of teaching. To attain it we must be able to guess what will interest; we must learn to read the childish soul as we might a piece of music. Then, by simply changing the key, we keep up the attraction and vary the song.

Henri-Frédéric Amiel, Swiss Philosopher, Poet, and Critic

“The gift of a great teacher is creating an awareness of greatness in others.”

Greta K. Nagel, Author of The Tao of Teaching

“I am a teacher. A teacher is someone who leads. There is no magic here. I do not walk on water, I do not part the sea. I just love children.”

Marva Collins, Educator

“I still can not get used to how much my heart soars with every student’s success, and how a piece of my heart is plucked away when any student slips away.”

Delissa L. Mai, 9th Grade Teacher

“It is the greatest achievement of a teacher to enable his students to surpass him.”

John Kemeny, Mathematician, Computer Scientist, Educator, Developer of BASIC

“We think it’s about little techniques and tricks, but techniques only take you so far. We need teachers who care about kids, who care about what they teach, and who can communicate with kids.”

Parker J. Palmer, author of The Courage to Teach

“You can preach at them: that is a hook without a worm; you can order them to volunteer: that is dishonest; you can call upon them: you are needed, and that approach will hardly ever fail.”

Kurt Hahn, German Educator

“The greatest sign of success for a teacher … is to be able to say, ‘The children are now working as if I did not exist.’”

Maria Montessori, Italian Educator and Education Theorist

“It is the responsibility of every adult … to make sure that children hear what we have learned from the lessons of life and to hear over and over that we love them and that they are not alone.”

Marian Wright Edelman, Founder of the Children’s Defense Fund
