Weekly News Round-Up for March 23rd
posted by: Melissa | March 23, 2018, 06:37 PM

Each week, AAE brings its members a round-up of what’s happening in education. From big, eye-catching headlines to the stories most papers overlook, we find the news our members really want to see. This week, there’s the March for our Lives, more guns in schools, teacher protests, and more!

“March for our Lives” to Be Held on Saturday: In a continuation of the student-led protests against gun violence, students will converge on Washington D.C. this Saturday in the March for our Lives. The march has been organized by the Stoneman Douglas High School student group #NeverAgain and a gun control advocacy group, Everytown for Gun Safety. The rally is expected to draw 500,000 participants to D.C. with at least 800 sister marches happening around the country on the same day. Ahead of the march, students from Parkland, FL have travelled to the capital and are meeting with lawmakers to lobby for stricter gun control. The students are already looking ahead to the 2018 midterm elections, where some of them will be of voting age, and hoping that their efforts will affect those outcomes. Meanwhile, this wave of student activism has caught the attention of the nation and has even resulted in the Parkland students being featured in Time Magazine.

More Focus on School Security after Yet Another Shooting: Ahead of the march, Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School is attempting to create a safer environment for its students by requiring ID badges and clear backpacks. The efforts come the same week of reports of their being students bringing weapons to the school, causing many students to stay home. Unfortunately, this was not an isolated incident. Many students were arrested this week for the same thing. Tragically, in Maryland, a male student shot and killed Jaelynn Willey, a female student who attended the same school. Unlike the random victims in Parkland, this time the victim seems to have been chosen because she had been in a relationship with the student. Although the gunman was stopped by the school resource officer, this shooting revealed yet more weaknesses in school security.

Teachers Fight for Higher Pay: Teachers in Arizona and Kentucky took to the streets this week in an attempt to pressure lawmakers into increasing their pay. Arizona teachers protested and held sick outs as part of their #RedForEd movement. Participants in the movement, started by the group Arizona Educators United, say the state’s low pay has made it hard to find and retain both regular classroom and substitute teachers. In Kentucky, teachers held a statewide rally in the capitol on Wednesday in protest of cuts to education funding, causing seven school districts in the state to close. The cuts hurt the teacher pension system, putting the retirement of the state’s teaching force at risk.
