Educator Brings the Universe into His Classroom with AAE Scholarship

Science Education has always held the promise of broadening our students’ imaginations and for opening them up to the possibilities of the world around them. It is in this spirit that AAE awarded a Teacher Scholarship to Thomas Bulman this past spring.

AAE’s National Teacher Scholarship and Classroom Grant Program awards teachers up to $500 for select classroom projects or professional development opportunities. Mr. Bulman used his award to help pay for his attendance at the 2019 Space Port Area Conference for Educators (SPACE). SPACE is a relatively new conference held each year at the Kennedy Space Center. Attending educators participate in interactive, hands-on sessions with NASA astronauts and scientists, tour Kennedy Space Center and Cape Canaveral, and hear the latest information about the commercial collaborations and scientific advances shaping the future of space exploration.

Of his experience, Mr. Bulman said, “I experienced so many amazing tours at the Kennedy Space Center Complex and great presentations about how to infuse STEAM into my classroom. This experience has helped me to be a better teacher by having the opportunity to learn and build a greater understanding of space and how to fully inspire my students with space-related curriculum content.” Mr. Bulman also witnessed a rocket launch up close.

He reports that he’s planning to incorporate what he’s learned into his first grade classes as school begins again this fall and hopes to share what he’s learned with his colleagues.

AAE is excited to support excellent educators such as Mr. Bulman, and we’re thrilled that his experience inspired him and will continue to inspire his students for years to come.

The AAE Foundation National Teacher Scholarship and Classroom Grant program was created to acknowledge passionate educators with awards up to $500. Recipients are chosen through a rigorous review process that involves AAE members and staff. If you would like to apply for a scholarship or grant, our fall deadline is October 1st.

We are also looking for current AAE members who would be willing to help score applications. If you’re interested in this opportunity, please email profdev@aaeteachers.org.
