Know Edmodo

How much have you developed your Professional Learning Community? (PLC) Or maybe a Professional Learning Network? (PLN) Does your school lack in funding for professional development? Or maybe you would like to have a social networking experience with your students and your school blocks Facebook/Twitter. Or maybe you just aren't quite ready to conquer Twitter language? Perhaps you have recently moved to a new state and you're trying to learn the ropes of teaching a new population of students. Or maybe you're at a school that, unfortunately, lacks opportunities for collaborating with your colleagues. Want to find new teaching strategies? Or develop a different content-specific curriculum?

Want one answer for all of those questions? Edmodo—A Secure Social Learning Network for Teachers and Students. Boom. It's awesome. Watch the introductory video.

Over the last month, I have attended numerous conferences and Edmodo has been discussed in some way or another at each one. Either a presenter mentions it, users advocate for it, or a workshop is helping educators use it for the first time.

Some Edmodo perks include:
  • It is purposefully set up to look and function in a manner similar to Facebook.
  • It's free!
  • There are Edmodo mobile apps for Android, iPhone, and all of Apple's other "i" products.
  • Teachers can create polls for their students/communities.
  • Share, communicate, and share more with other teachers and students.
  • Student homework and class assignments can be posted (no more "lost" excuses)
  • This summer Edmodo has gone through some significant upgrades to improve and streamline the users' experiences.
  • And I mention this above, but it's worth restating, Edmodo is a safe social platform for teachers and students to interact—something that has been a great concern for many.
More good news. On Wednesday, August 10, 2011, Edmodo is holding EdmodoCon 2011, "the first annual one-day global virtual conference for educators." You can participate in your PJs (I'm a fan). Register here. And join, of course. Feeling sheepish? Take a few minutes to watch some tutorials on the Edmodo1 channel of YouTube.

The conference goal "is for EdmodoCon to become a global gathering of educators who believe in the power of collaboration and social media to improve education worldwide. Educators from all over the world will come together to celebrate the creative ways you are using Edmodo in the classroom, learn new ideas that you can use immediately, and challenge each other and the Edmodo team to think way beyond our existing ideas of social learning."

This conference is meant for all education stakeholders according to the organizers:
  • Teachers in all disciplines
  • Computer technology coordinators
  • K-12 administrators
  • Staff Developers and Teacher trainers
  • Curriculum developers
  • Principals
Take a professional development day in August. Sign-up now; Registration just opened. Enlarge your PLC/PLN. Learn about social networking opportunities for you and your classroom. Take another step into 21st century education. And then let us know about it. See you there.

Do you already use Edmodo? What do you think?
