Member Mention: AAEF Awards Hardship Grant to Joplin Tornado Victim
posted by: Alix | August 26, 2011, 01:30 PM

This summer, Ms. Andrea Thomas of Joplin, MO was awarded a hardship grant to purchase materials for her students lost in May's natural disaster. The funding will allow Ms. Thomas to replenish her classroom with supplies including notebooks, books, and other office supplies lost in the tornado. In addition, Ms. Thomas' professional membership in AAE was extended free of charge for one year.

"I have been so impressed by the Association of American Educators," said Ms. Thomas, an elementary school teacher. "I've been telling everyone how much support and care I have felt from the association and their kind staff. These materials will make a tremendous difference in my classroom this year."

The entire AAEF family has been inspired by the amazing resilience of the educator of Joplin. "While we cannot replace all lost materials, we hope that helping one deserving educator can make an impact," said AAEF Chairman Gary Beckner. "Ours thoughts and prayers are with the entire community as we wish them a successful 2010-2012 school year."

Don't forget, AAEF's national scholarship and grant program deadline is approaching! Teacher scholarships and classroom grants are competitive awards available to all educators. Teachers who have experienced natural disasters will be given special consideration. Apply online or by mail to receive up to $500 for professional development or classroom materials. Don't forget to mark your calendar for the fall deadline, October 1, 2011.

This is great that AAEF extended her membership free of charge for a year. Yeah for AAE.
