With the debate over No Child Left Behind taking a partisan turn, Director of Education Policy Studies at the American Enterprise Institute Frederick Hess and Stanford Education Professor Linda Darling-Hammond penned an op-ed this week in The New York Times. In their candid assessment, both scholars examine the role of the federal government in education and the pros and cons of Washington, D.C.'s involvement. The debate over renewing No Child Left Behind, the education reform act that will be 10 years old in January, has fallen along partisan lines even though school improvement is one of the few examples of bipartisan cooperation over the last decade. In your opinion, what is the ideal role of the Department of Education in American education? Comment below.
