Today, February 1, 2012, students, parents, teachers, state leaders and education advocates from across the country are celebrating the first ever Digital Learning Day! This day recognizes the power of digital learning to improve student achievement and transform education for the 21st century. As part of the festivities, governors, education chiefs, lawmakers and policymakers across the nation are marking this day by making a commitment to fostering digital learning for students. Organized by the Alliance for Excellent Education, this awareness day has welcomed strong bi-partisan and diverse support from the entire education community. Former Florida Governor and Chair of the Foundation for Excellence Jeb Bush praised the occasion. "A quality education can change a life, and digital learning has the power to ensure each and every student in America has access to a high quality education that prepares them for a lifetime of success." A decade ago, customizing education for every student was just a dream, but in today's climate technology allows students to learn in their own style, at their own pace, anytime and anywhere. The same can be said for virtual school teachers who are able to customize their own career via technology and online options. In fact, as part of National School Choice Week, AAE commissioned a video showcasing a virtual school educator benefitting from these advancements in the profession. Further, according to the 2011 AAE Membership Survey, members from across the country are supportive of these new and emerging technology options and possibilities. According to the data, 85% of AAE member teachers already incorporate technology in their lesson plans at least some of the time. Another 58% of survey respondents agree with a policy that would phase out textbooks with digital content, including interactive and adaptive multimedia. In Utah for example, a law guaranteeing high school student access to any course including any AP, foreign language, or STEM course via an online database sets the bar high for access to online learning. An overwhelming 75% of teachers support this law and its efforts to offer students personalized options. Clearly, AAE members are embracing new technologies as the wave of the future. Not only do educators realize that these advancements can benefit student outcomes, but they have potential to revolutionize the profession for the better.
