Discussing 9/11 with Students
posted by: Melissa | September 07, 2012, 07:34 PM

Next week is the 11th anniversary of 9/11. If you are one of the teachers struggling with how to present this serious and sometimes overwhelming piece of modern American history to students who weren't alive for it or don't remember, you are not alone. Fortunately, the web is filled with lessons and resources for teachers in the same boat. I've listed some of the best below:

  • September 11: Teaching Contemporary History Put together by the Smithsonian, this high quality site has numerous resources for all age groups. Last year, they hosted several round-table discussions for teachers on how to teach about this historic event. These discussions are recorded and available on the website.
  • Teaching 9/11 | Ideas and Projects from Teachers The New York Times' Learning Network blog is always a wealth of resources and pays off here. Last year, they collected ideas for projects from their readers and you'll find them in this blog entry.
  • The Nation Remembers 9/11 Scholastic has a page of articles and other resources aimed at students from elementary age to high school.
  • In Remembrance: Teaching September 11 This page is put together by teachinghistory.org, a great source of primary resources. Their page is extensive and has a lot to offer.
  • 102 Minutes That Changed America This site is probably only appropriate for high school students. This site offers video and newscast resources from the attacks.

How do you approach discussing 9/11 with your students? Do you have go-to resources to add?
