Our guest blog today is by Ami Ware, who won an AAE Foundation Teacher Scholarship.
Finding meaningful, professional development can often be difficult for educators. Luckily, for librarians and others who are passionate about sharing a love of reading and books, there are a few amazing opportunities every year to meet with like minded individuals, authors, illustrators, and industry leaders who continue to shine a light on the importance of library programs nationwide. One such event is the Texas Library Association annual conference that takes place annually in various major cities throughout Texas in March. This year, attendees will meet in Houston to share and learn ways to ensure the future success of their library programs while also meeting with vendors, experiencing new technology tools, and hearing from award winning authors like Lois Lowry and Jason Reynolds.

Well, it’s that time of year again. The time of year where we as a nation check off the proverbial box of honoring the impact and contributions of African Americans in the United States. For a whole 28 days, we see Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., George Washington Carver, Frederick Douglass, Rosa Parks, Harriet Tubman and countless others surrounded by red, green, yellow and black flooding our timelines, tv screens, classrooms, and communities. But how genuine is the honor, if it lasts for one very short month and doesn’t tell the whole story?

Valentine’s Day is celebrated in the elementary classroom. Students and teachers often spend the day sharing candy, completing heart-shaped activities, and playing games. Once students reach the upper grades, the situation often changes dramatically. Knowing of the day’s potential to lead to drama, many middle and high school teachers ignore the celebrations.

Every year, AAE awards thousands of dollars in scholarships to help educators attain the professional development they need as they grow in their careers. This past year, some of those funds were awarded to Hollie Carroll so she could attend the 2020 California Kindergarten Conference.
