posted by: Jill | October 19, 2011, 11:14 am
What if you could see your students' learning outside of the classroom? Perhaps an after school job that is improving reasoning skills; or an online video game which is strengthening the ability to collaborate; or just simply a website that is assisting in the improvement of analytical reading skills. That would be nifty...yes, nifty.   Continue Reading...

posted by: Jill | October 12, 2011, 03:23 pm
Today there is a very happy 14 year-old in school. Last night, she created her own Facebook profile after months (years) of pleading to parents. Her "technology is power" aunt may have had something to do with it. And her Facebook-savvy cousin was more than happy to assist in the birth of an online profile.   Continue Reading...

In the wake of the cheating scandals in high profile school districts like Atlanta, education experts are calling for a shift from paper and pencil testing, toward online and electronic assessments for students across all grade levels. In an effort to incorporate more technology into classrooms, the move is designed to combat cheating, increase efficiency, and phase out bubble testing for all standardized state assessments.   Continue Reading...

Teachers around the world are gearing up for the new school year -- but the experience is going to be vastly different for new teachers. Where an experienced teacher has the knowledge of what worked and what didn't, a new teacher is going to be bombarded with tons of new info and the need to process it! Not to mention, they will be preparing for the most important piece of all: their classroom instruction.   Continue Reading...

Let's see if following anecdote takes you on a walk down memory lane:"I was watching my sister-in-law struggle to write a paper. She wasn't struggling with what to say, but with the physical process of writing. She was sitting at the kitchen counter trying to type a passage into her laptop, her elbow shakily propping open the book from which she was quoting. She was forced to look back and forth from the book to the screen; she'd lose her place; the book would slip and close; the whole thing was terribly awkward. I thought, 'There's really gotta be a better way to do that.' "   Continue Reading...
Facebook Law Takes Center Stage
posted by: Alix | August 30, 2011, 10:00 am
While we discuss Facebook frequently on the AAE blog, one story about teachers and the appropriate use of the popular social networking tool has been gaining national headlines for weeks. In Missouri, a law was passed that barred teachers from communicating with students privately through Facebook. While the legislation was intended to protect students, educators in the state argue the rules go too far, citing first amendments rights and invasion of privacy.   Continue Reading...

As we energize a new set of students to tackle curriculum for their betterment, I hope we will do the same for ourselves as educators. And, in true form, I suggest Twitter as the curriculum that we should tackle.   Continue Reading...
Teachers & Facebook: What You Should Know
posted by: Alix | August 23, 2011, 08:40 am
We have often highlighted the social networking website Facebook on the AAE blog. Since its inception in 2004, Facebook has grown from a college photo sharing website to household name and education tool. Currently, 1 in every 13 people on Earth is using the site. With these enormous numbers, a growing percentage of teachers and students are actively using Facebook, raising questions about appropriate use, professional standards, and far-reaching school district policies.   Continue Reading...

How much have you developed your Professional Learning Community? (PLC) Or maybe a Professional Learning Network? (PLN) Does your school lack in funding for professional development? Or maybe you would like to have a social networking experience with your students and your school blocks Facebook/Twitter. Or maybe you just aren't quite ready to conquer Twitter language? Or maybe you're at a school that, unfortunately, lacks opportunities for collaborating with your colleagues. Want to find new teaching strategies? Or develop a different content-specific curriculum?   Continue Reading...
Corporate donations to public education are common place in today's struggling financial climate. Last fall, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg pledged an unprecedented $100 million to the ailing Newark, New Jersey's school system. Today, in an effort to spur additional private donations, President Obama held a roundtable discussion at the White House with like-minded CEOs to raise private funds for American K-12 education. Following today's closed door meeting, three companies including Bank of America, Microsoft, and Nike announced new pledges totaling $66 million toward education programs.   Continue Reading...

The schools are combination of both an independent, innovative charter with the technology and online curriculum usually associated with a purely virtual school.   Continue Reading...
