This week President Obama outlined the federal budget at a middle school in Baltimore. While he discussed the scope of the entire federal budget, education was a major focus. President Obama devoted an unprecedented amount of time to education in Tuesday's State of the Union address. U.S. Falling Behind According to New International Rankings

American Students are falling behind according to new international rankings released this week. The Programme for International Student Assessment or PISA is a system of international assessments that measures 15-year-olds' performance in reading literacy, math literacy, and science literacy every three years. In 2009, the U.S. and 64 other countries and education systems participated in PISA with a specific focus on reading literacy. The scores have illustrated some interesting and disturbing trends for student performance in key subjects compared to European and Asian students.   Continue Reading...
One Utah School Ahead of the Digital Learning Pack

In recent years, reformers and policy makers have stressed the need for incorporating technology in education. New technologies have revolutionized how we live our lives from shopping to business; why not incorporate them into the classroom? In November, the Department of Education released a technology plan through their Office of Educational Technology entitled, Transforming American Education: Learning Powered by Technology. All-Star Education Reform Lineup Speaks at Harvard

Last week some of the best-known names in education reform converged for a round-table discussion at Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government. The moderator, former Secretary of Education under President George W. Bush, Margaret Spellings told the crowd, "It's like we have Mick Jagger, Bruce Springsteen, and Tina Turner together on the same stage," referring to the panel. Former Washington, D.C., chancellor of schools Michelle Rhee, former Florida governor Jeb Bush, and former Clinton White House chief of staff John Podesta called for teacher accountability and school reform in their discussion entitled, "Strange Bedfellows: The Politics of Education and the Future of Reform".   Continue Reading...

Department of Education Releases New Technology Plan

This week, the Department of Education released a new national education technology plan through their Office of Educational Technology entitled, Transforming American Education: Learning Powered by Technology.  The report comes on the heels of some major breakthroughs relating to technology in education, often highlighted on the AAE blog.

Charter Schools Serving as Models for Other Public Schools

Charter schools were designed as a "research and development" outlet for public schools. Operating on state funds, public charter schools have been able to implement new ideas for their students and teachers without having to follow the same rigid structures of some public schools. The U.S. Department of Education is now conducting a feasibility study on ways to support the spread of promising charter school practices across the country.   Continue Reading...

Waiting for "Superman" is a Hit

The numbers are in for the much-talked-about documentary, Waiting for "Superman" and it seems director Davis Guggenheim has another hit on his hands. Despite the fact that it only debuted in New York and Los Angeles the movie performed extremely well.

TIF Program Winners Announced

This week, the US Department of Education announced the 62 winning applicants of the Teacher Incentive Fund grant competition or TIF. The winning participants represent rural and urban school districts, as well as nonprofit organizations and education organizations from 27 states across the country.

Education Reform Has Gone Mainstream

If you caught Oprah yesterday afternoon you would have noticed that the new film, Waiting for "Superman" was showcased and revered as a new mainstream documentary about what is wrong with our schools.Oprah is doing a real service to her mainstream audience by focusing an hour of her show to the argument for real education reform. With this film and positive support from media powerhouses like Oprah, Director Davis Guggenheim will be able to reach average, everyday Americans, who, no doubt, will be outraged when they see this film.

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie is fuming at the federal government's unwillingness to let his administration address a clerical error in their 1,000 page application that likely cost his state $400 million in Race to the Top funding. A simple clerical mistake on the application switched 2008-09 budget numbers for 2010-11. Two weeks prior to the final decision, New Jersey officials met with federal officials and corrected the data in person, but apparently the verbal correction was not accepted. Gov. Christie is taking full responsibility and refuses to even release the name of the mid-level staffer who made the error.  Continue Reading...

AAE Touted as Alternative to Unions

This week President Obama signed a $26 billion jobs bill designed to supplement struggling state education budgets, touting that the extra funding will save the jobs of teachers that would otherwise be laid off. Sarah Lee, of The Daily Caller, and others have criticized the bill as being a bailout to the teachers unions. 19 Finalists Vie for Federal Funds

Finalists in the second round of the Race to the Top (RTTT) program are preparing to present their cases to Education Secretary Arne Duncan and the RTTT peer reviewers who will adjust each state’s scores based on their presentations. Some speculate that the presentations during the first weeks of August won’t substantially alter the scores, because scores changed little after interviews in RTTT’s first round.  Continue Reading...

Trouble with Top-Down Federal Funding for Education

Joyce Irvine is a casualty of bureaucratic necessity. A stellar principal by all accounts, Ms. Irvine was traded by her Burlington, Vermont school district for $3 million in federal stimulus funding. Despite a myriad of successes listed in a recent New York Times article, Ms. Irvine's couldn't significantly raise annual test scores during her six-year tenure as principal of Wheeler Elementary School. Under an Obama administration funding formula, Ms. Irvine has to lose her job if her school district is going to receive stimulus dollars.  Continue Reading...
