The economic crisis of 2008 has hit millions of families extremely hard.  According to the U.S. Department of Education, over 1.1 million children were considered homeless during the 2011-12 school year. This statistic is 10% higher than the year before and 72% higher than before the recession.

Department of Education to Scale Back NCLB Waiver-Renewal MandatesThe U.S. Department of Education is planning to streamline and modify the process of No Child Left Behind (NCLB) waiver renewals. In August, the administration announced new difficult mandates for waiver approval. However, the Department of Education will soon release an updated mandate process, which includes a significant relaxation of equity in teacher distribution.

Department of Education Remains Almost Empty

As the government begins its third week of partial shutdown, the Department of Education (DOE) faces yet another week of limited staffing and minimal productivity. Many Department of Education employees’ phones go straight to voicemail, the website merely announces the furlough, and progress remains stalled.

 As of today, the federal government has shut down due to inability to resolve the 2013-2014 budget and debt ceiling. The shutdown will effectively postpone all education hearings and send hundred of government employees home at the Department of Education.   Continue Reading...

The equal treatment of special education students continues to be a focus of Secretary Duncan and the Department of Education. For special education students, current No Child Left Behind provisions permitted 2% of students per state to learn a curriculum based on “modified” objectives and be measured on an aligned test. Secretary Duncan Names Leaders to the National Assessment Governing Board

 

Last week, Secretary Duncan appointed five education leaders -- a state legislator, an elementary school principal, a testing and measurement expert, and two parent/general public members -- to the National Assessment Governing Board (NAEP). In 2010 Congress passed the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act to provide nutritional regulations for school lunches. Late in June, Congress held a committee hearing examining the consequences of these new regulations.

Today, members of the House of Representatives Education and the Workforce Committee passed the Student Success Act through committee. This legislation, introduced by Chairman John Kline (R-MN) and Representative Rokita (R-IN) will rewrite K-12 education law, also known as No Child Left Behind (NCLB) and is designed to provide state and local leaders the flexibility necessary to innovate in the classroom and raise student achievement.   Continue Reading...
No Child Left Behind Overhaul Activity in Congress

While lawmakers continue to propose legislation for the reauthorization of No Child Left Behind (NCLB), none of the measures have managed to gain bipartisan support. Experts agree that despite these new proposals, NCLB will most likely not be reauthorized this year.
