Violent crimes in public schools have been a hot topic in the American discourse for years. From Columbine to Virginia Tech, communities have realized that violent incidents can strike anywhere. Just this past January, Education Matters featured a story on the warning signs of school violence for educators. Last May, a report issued by the American Institute of Architects and the U.S. Green Building Council found that "green schools" are not only better for students, teachers, and the environment, but are also benefiting the bottom line. At a time when districts everywhere are facing major budget shortfalls, a school system in Mississippi is putting the theory to the test.   Continue Reading...

In the wake of the crippling recession and its decimating impact on state and local budgets, school districts across the country are searching for innovative ways of raising funds. In a bizarre turn, districts in states like Colorado, Utah, and New Jersey are selling advertisement space on everything from school buses to report cards. While the ideas will certainly be revenue generating, members of the public are beginning to call the moves inappropriate for the public school setting.   Continue Reading...

While this is the third time President Obama has addressed students in a back-to-school speech, the motivational talk took a political turn in advocating for his billion-dollar proposals to hire more teachers and increase school infrastructure spending.   Continue Reading...
Creating a School Week that Works
posted by: Alix | August 22, 2011, 10:52 am
One of the most debated aspects of school reform has been the issue of the traditional school schedule. Last fall, President Obama made headlines for advocating for a longer school day. Others argue a year-round environment is the best fit. While everyone has an opinion about the ideal schedule, budget shortfalls have forced a number of districts to shorten their school week, raising more questions about the perfect balance between length of school day and quality programs and curriculum.   Continue Reading...

Utah's Ogden School District is a small district just north of Salt Lake City. A charming community with less than 1,000 teachers, Ogden is making news for its school board's decision to bypass local union negotiations in favor of sending individual contracts to teachers for the upcoming school year. While the move has obviously infuriated the local union, the move has been described as not only a trend in teacher negotiations, but the future of how policymakers and school districts will communicate with teachers, especially in areas with hostile and uncompromising unions.   Continue Reading...

As new revelations surface daily, blame is shifting from teachers to administrators, and everyone else in between, raising even larger questions about the intense pressure teachers are facing over state and federal testing mandates.   Continue Reading...
The Great Homework Debate
posted by: Alix | July 01, 2011, 10:48 am
What are your thoughts about homework in today's world? Conventional wisdom suggests students need homework to teach them to work independently and to reinforce curriculum after an initial lesson. While this is the intent of home-based projects, parents and students have been complaining that evenings filled with piles of worksheets can take away time from extracurricular activities and can be unfair to students without the proper home support. As a result, in the Los Angeles Unified School District, the school board has enacted a new policy that homework can count for only 10% of a student's overall grade.   Continue Reading...
