AAE Responds to Introduction
of Educators Expense Deduction Modernization Act of 2022

Mission Viejo, CA – The Association of American Educators (AAE), a national non-union, professional association serving educators in all fifty states, is pleased to see AAE’s October 2020 proposal for increasing the existing Educator Expense Deduction from $250 to $1,000 be presented in the recently introduced Educators Expense Deduction Modernization Act of 2022. This important legislation addresses the long overdue support for educators whose annual out-of-pocket classroom expenses typically exceed $500 and even more for educators serving students in high-poverty schools.

“Congress and the President should act quickly to implement this overdue increase and ensure our nation’s educators are not unfairly taxed on their above-and-beyond commitment to providing necessities and supplements to our students throughout the nation,” noted AAE Executive Director Colin Sharkey.

AAE first proposed quadrupling the popular Educator Expense Deduction in 2020, also calling for permitting up to $400 of home internet expenses to be included as a qualifying expense. At that time, many of America’s students were relying on virtual instruction, demonstrating the importance of reliable broadband internet for all of America’s educators.

“Educators have always dipped into their own pockets to cover classroom expenses, filled gaps in needed supplies and technology, and stretched every dollar to meet students’ learning goals. Increasing the Educator Expense Deduction from $250 to $1,000 would return some of those unreimbursed expenses directly to educators who have gone above and beyond to provide for their students,” noted AAE Executive Director Colin Sharkey at that time.

The Association of American Educators (AAE) is the largest national, nonunion, professional educator organization, advancing the profession by offering a modern approach to educator empowerment and advocacy—promoting professionalism, collaboration, and excellence without a partisan agenda. AAE is committed to a teaching profession that is student oriented, well respected, and personally fulfilling. AAE serves members in all fifty states and welcomes professionals from all education entities. Membership is $16.50 per month and includes $2 million professional liability insurance, employment rights coverage, professional resources, and many other benefits. Classroom teachers, paraprofessionals, administrators, student teachers, university professors, and supporters can learn more at aaeteachers.org.
