AAE Member Survey Reports “Appreciation and Recognition” as Top No-Cost Request from Teachers

Mission Viejo, CA – The Association of American Educators (AAE), a national non-union, professional association serving educators in all fifty states, released preliminary findings from a recent survey of its members focusing on job satisfaction and school culture. The results reveal how important appreciation is when it comes to teacher job satisfaction.

“Be more appreciative of the work that I do and give recognition” was the top answer to the question: “What is the one thing administration could do to greatly improve your overall job satisfaction without requiring more funding?” Eighteen percent of the more than 1,000 members who responded to the survey preferred “appreciation and recognition” over “more autonomy,” “more planning time,” “more coaching and feedback,” greater “transparency,” and several other options.

“We trust these survey results will be a helpful reminder to school leaders throughout the country that Teacher Appreciation Week can and should last all year,” said AAE Executive Director Colin Sharkey, “Expressing genuine appreciation does not impact the budget or require a new levy. In fact any great school leader will tell you that cultivating a culture where your team feels appreciated and accomplishments are recognized is fundamental to success.”

In response to a follow up question, “Have you ever asked your administration to make this change?” more than fifty percent of those who selected “appreciation and recognition” admitted they had not talked to administration. Some respondents reported fear that any feedback would be viewed as criticism and that appreciation means less when it is requested.

“Teachers are highly educated professionals devoted to their students and supportive of their colleagues,” added Sharkey, “School leaders should have very little difficulty expressing appreciation and recognition for their countless contributions.”

Ninety percent of the more than 1,000 survey respondents were public district and public charter school educators and two thirds of the respondents rated their job satisfaction as “very satisfied” or “somewhat satisfied.” Full survey results will be made available later this month.
