Association of American Educators: Teachers in Wisconsin Deserve the Right to Vote

Alexandria, VA – Yesterday, Wisconsin's Dane County Circuit Court Judge Juan Colas held the Wisconsin Employment Relations Commission in contempt for enforcing Act 10 by permitting recertification elections for teacher unions around the state. The decision could potentially affect thousands of educators who have already fled the union in favor of professional alternatives.

Following the news, AAE Executive Director Gary Beckner issued the following statement:

"Wisconsinites have spoken loud and clear in favor of teacher freedom of choice. Following two years of legal battles and debate, it was our hope that the state could ultimately move on from this confusion and start a new chapter.

Sadly due to the clearly biased actions of an activist judge, the state will once again have to endure unnecessary legal action and mass confusion in the coming weeks over recertification elections. Teachers in Wisconsin deserve the right to vote on representation and the ability to select an organization that matches their beliefs and budget.

Hopefully, the Wisconsin State Supreme Court will ultimately side with the will of the people and end this debate. Teachers across the state are demanding options and voters have clearly rejected forced unionism. Since this law took effect, AAE has welcomed teachers from across the state seeking a professional and nonpartisan option. Regardless of outcome, we look forward to serving Wisconsin's hard-working teachers for years to come."
