December 2009 Education Matters: Declaring Independence
posted by: Colin | January 04, 2010, 02:24 PM

The December 2009 edition of Education Matters (now available for non-members to read and download) includes an article highlighting how a local teachers union in Washington state disaffiliated from the state and national teachers unions. In "Declaring Independence," read about how the local teachers freed themselves from the WEA and the NEA—and saved money. Many teachers in local-only teachers unions join a group like AAE to receive member benefits they lose when disaffiliating, including liability insurance—and membership in AAE often costs much less than the savings teachers gain from disaffiliating.

But it is not just about the money, as one of the local teachers notes, "It is liberating to declare our independence from the big teacher unions."

Local teachers in other states have disaffiliated from the state and national teachers unions in recent years, including teachers in Kansas, Illinois, and Michigan.
