This week, Startup Noodle released a list of the 41 most innovative schools in America. The list includes 17 traditional public schools, 12 private schools, and 13 public charter schools.

What are they doing that makes these schools so special? All 41 of them have their own unique characteristics and innovative teaching styles. Here’s what you need to know about these amazing schools…

How were they chosen? These 41 schools were chosen based on the following criteria:

  1. They serve K-12 students.
  2. They are accredited (or soon to be accredited).
  3. They introduce new curricular or pedagogical approaches to learning.
  4. They produce sustainable and positive outcomes for students.

How can my school follow suit? Some of these pioneering techniques you might want to consider in your own classroom involve:

  1. Flipped classrooms
  2. Gamified lessons
  3. Phenomenon-based learning
  4. Student-led governance
  5. Broadened technology use
  6. Partnerships with engineers and educators
  7. Learning that takes place outside the classroom, and even schools entirely
  8. Highly tailored individualized lesson plans
  9. Collaborative group projects

How were they graded? Positive outcomes included:

  1. High College placement rates
  2. Student standardized tests performance
  3. Improved attendance rates
  4. Reduction in bullying rates
  5. Elimination of truancy
  6. Creation of supportive learning environments

The Association of American Educators feels that these schools are proof of what’s possible when innovation is made a top priority.
