Creative Teachers Use Technology to Enhance Education

Teachers attempting to integrate technology into their classrooms have a number of obstacles to overcome (see earlier blog post, How Much Does Technology Advance Classroom Learning?), but they also have the world at their fingertips—literally. A recent article in Education Week describes how teachers across the nation are using technology in innovative and instructive ways.

Silvia Rosenthal Tolisano of Jacksonville, Florida launched a project called “Around the world with 80 schools” in which students from Tolisano’s school Skype with students in classrooms around the world. The project teaches students real-world skills like preparing for an interview, filming, photography, and interviewing. Tolisano also has students fact check completed interviews, find the location of other schools on Google Maps, and tweet about the live events as they happen. She uses the technology as a tool to enhance student’s education.

Deia Scott, featured in The Bakersfield Californian, has used her district’s online curriculum system to create a local network for sharing innovative lesson plans. "We are all about sharing what's good for the kids," says Kathy Walker, director of curriculum and standards, "This vehicle benefits them." The lesson plans that Scott spent hours developing integrate classroom technology available in the district with state learning requirements for students to provide all of the district’s educators with fresh ideas to adapt to their classrooms.

Teachers who want to share ideas and learn from others in their industry can sign up at sites like classroom20.com, simplek12.com, or teachersrecess.com to share lesson plans, buy and sell teaching supplies, learn about newly developed technologies for education, chat with other teachers, and follow the latest news in the education arena.

Technology and social media are tools for savvy educators to enhance their teaching and improve their skills.
