Each week, AAE brings its members a round-up of what’s happening in education. From big, eye-catching headlines to the stories most papers overlook, we find the news our members really want to see. This week, a school lunch lawsuit, a pay raises, an unvaccinated student, and more! States Sue Over Federal Lunch Standards: On Wednesday, a group of Democratic attorneys general announced that they were suing the Trump administration over changes made to federal school nutrition standards. The group says the administration’s roll back of Obama-era guidelines illegally weakens the standards and will disproportionately affect students from low-income families along with students of color. Texas Advances Bill for Teacher Pay Raises, Guns in Schools: The Texas State House approved an education bill that would dramatically increase funding for schools, among other things. At least part of that funding will be required to go to an across the board pay raise for teachers. Meanwhile, an education bill in the Texas Senate seeks to allow school marshals to carry concealed firearms on campus. A previous version of the bill would have required that weapons be kept in a locked box, but this provision was removed from the current bill. Kentucky Judge Rules against Unvaccinated Student: A judge this week ruled that the state of Kentucky did not violate a student’s freedom of religion when it barred the student from participating in basketball. During a chickenpox outbreak, the state’s health department barred unvaccinated students from attending school and extracurricular activities until the outbreak passed. The student argued that getting vaccinated violated his religious beliefs, however the court found that the state had acted within current law and had not targeted the student due to his religion.
