Google Announces New Information Literacy Curriculum

Tech giant Google is adding a new media literacy program to the content it already makes available for teachers and students. The new program, called “Be Internet Awesome,” includes six activities that teach students everything from avoiding fake websites to evaluating sources of materials. These activities take place in a game that they’re calling “Interland.”

The company worked with experts in the field of internet safety to create a program they say makes “it easy and fun for kids to learn key skills for evaluating what they see online.” Google is also working with the YMCA and National PTA to host online safety classes in the next few months.

The course is a timely addition. Misinformation on the internet has been a topic at the forefront of national attention in recent years, as have the efforts of large tech companies to monetize the information gathered from users. Accordingly, the Interland game doesn’t require students to log-in. While this means that student privacy will be protected, it also means that students can’t save their progress and return to a game at a later date.

The course is designed for students between the 2nd and 6th grades and can be accessed on Google’s website
