Weekly News Round-Up for January 24th

Each week, AAE brings its members a round-up of what’s happening in education. From big, eye-catching headlines to the stories most papers overlook, we find the news our members really want to see. This week: religious tax cuts, asbestos, gender-neutral restrooms, and more!

Supreme Court Hears Religious Rights Case: On Wednesday, the U.S. Supreme court heard arguments in a case that could have wide-ranging impact for schools and religious institutions. At the heart of the matter is a Montana tax credit program that provided aid to students attending private schools. Montana’s Supreme Court struck down the program because the funds could be used to send students to religious schools. Now the U.S. Supreme Court will decide whether that ruling was correct. In recent years, the court has ruled that excluding religious schools from public programs violated the constitution.

Asbestos Lawsuit: The Philadelphia Federation of Teachers announced that they’ll be suing the Philadelphia school district over asbestos contamination. The school district has been forced to close multiple buildings over the past school year due to asbestos. Recently, the district reopened a school they claimed had been cleaned, only to be forced to close the school again a few days later. The union says the district’s handling of contaminants is flawed and the district is being reckless in regards to the safety of students and staff.

Denver Public Schools Requires Gender-Neutral Restrooms: The Denver Public School Board voted to require all schools in the district to have a gender-neutral restroom. The measure was passed unanimously and with little controversy. It allows schools to designate an already existing restroom as gender-neutral to avoid construction costs. The move is being promoted as necessary to support LGBTQ students.
