posted by: Tamia | February 07, 2020, 10:16 PM

Each week, AAE brings its members a round-up of what’s happening in education. From big, eye-catching headlines to the stories most papers overlook, we find the news our members really want to see. This week: change is called upon.

California Coronavirus Outbreak: Coronavirus continues to spread throughout the United States, with a total of 12 confirmed cases, according to CBS News. Six of the 12 confirmed cases are in the state of California. Two people were diagnosed in Santa Clara County, two people in San Benito County, one person in Los Angeles County, and one person in Orange County, according to the California Department of Health. Over 14,000 people are calling on Alhambra Unified School District, which is comprised of 21 schools and over 16,000 students, to close school until the outbreak is over.

Disney C.E.O. Apologizes to PTA: Disney Chairman Robert A. Iger said on Thursday that the company is apologizing to a California elementary school. Students’ parents were asked to pay for a license after it showed “The Lion King” at a fund-raiser in 2019. Iger took to Twitter to express that the company “apologizes to the Emerson Elementary School P.T.A. and I will personally donate to their fund raising initiative.”

Ohio School Voucher Deal: A group of Ohio families, private schools, and conservative organizations are calling on the Ohio Supreme Court to block a deal on school vouchers. The deal, which was finalized Friday by lawmakers and Gov. Mike DeWine, delays the start of the application process for the EdChoice Scholarship program until April 1. Lawmakers are working on an alternative method to award school vouchers in the state.
