Valentine’s Day Activities for the Secondary Classroom

Valentine’s Day is celebrated in the elementary classroom. Students and teachers often spend the day sharing candy, completing heart-shaped activities, and playing games. Once students reach the upper grades, the situation often changes dramatically. Knowing of the day’s potential to lead to drama, many middle and high school teachers ignore the celebrations. 

 

Even if educators did want to celebrate the day in the classroom, appropriate activities are hard to find. A search of ‘valentine’s day math lessons’ will yield up pages upon pages of counting activities, or perhaps fractions. There is little to tempt the middle or high school teacher. We don’t think this needs to be the case. Below, we have just a few ideas for secondary teachers on this upcoming valentine’s day.
