Introducing the Darrell & Suzanne Holmquist Student Teacher of the Year Award
posted by: Tamia | June 08, 2021, 06:56 PM

The Association of American Educators has a long history of providing funds for educators just when they need them. We’re immensely proud of our Classroom Grant and Teacher Scholarship programs. Through them, we have been able to provide thousands of dollars each year to educators to spend on their professional development or on classroom supplies. Last year, we expanded that program to include our COVID-19 Relief Grants that helped teachers facing an uncertain school year to get the materials and training they needed. We’re ecstatic to announce that we are once again expanding our awards program.

This year we are unveiling the Darrell & Suzanne Holmquist Student Teacher of the Year Award to join our suite of annual awards programs.

Student teaching is a demanding time for students in education programs. It is the first time they have extensive contact with the types of students they’ll be teaching and their first attempt at running the administrative side of a classroom. It is the time in their education that they must take all the theoretical knowledge they’ve been accumulating for years and put it into practice.

Given the difficulty of this phase of educator training, we want to celebrate those who excel during their student teaching experience. As part of this recognition, the winning student teacher will be awarded $250 to spend on setting up their new classroom and receive a free year of AAE membership.

This is not something we could do on our own. As with many other aspects of AAE, we are made stronger by the passion our members show for their craft and the trust they have in this organization. This program is made possible by the generous donation of funds from long-time AAE member Darrell Holmquist and his wife Suzanne. Through their gift, they are helping young educators just when they need support the most. Thank you, Darrell and Suzanne!

This award is open to all education students who have completed their student teaching in the 2020-2021 school year and are entering the classroom for the first time in the fall of 2021. All educators are encouraged to nominate potential awardees and self-nominations are welcome.

Nominations are now being accepted. You can nominate a student teacher using our online form. If you would like more information about the program, email awards@aaeteachers.org.
