Jennifer Jenkins on her AAEF Grant

Educator Jennifer Jenkins used her AAEF Classroom Grant funds for the purchase of leveled readers for her students, who since the pandemic, have been struggling to meet their reading goals.

I have taught Kindergarten for seventeen years and this year has been the most difficult. I have noticed over the past two years, students are getting further and further behind as they enter Kindergarten. Students need to have a love for learning and a love of reading, and my job is to create an environment that does just that.

COVID is the new excuse and reason for struggling students. However, even during a pandemic, I know students can learn and grow, if we give them higher expectations. I do my best to help each child meet their individual goals by providing lots of hands-on learning.

For years, I have had to print individual leveled readers for each student (in black and white). It takes a lot of time, ink, and paper to do this. This classroom grant allowed me to purchase leveled readers for my literacy small groups. The  students absolutely love the size of the books and vibrant pictures. They enjoy reading to me and their friends!

Thank you AAE for providing these readers for my classroom so my students can have a love for literacy just as I do!
