Welcome to National School Choice Week

The first ever National School Choice Week started yesterday! This week, January 23-29, groups of students, parents, and teachers are joining hands in supporting choice in education. Grassroots organizations from all over the country are celebrating this monumental occasion with events in almost every state.

School Choice Week is a non-partisan initiative to raise awareness and interest in how increasing parents and student choice can lead to a successful education system. Education advocates ranging from House Speaker John Boehner to Comedian Bill Cosby are all on board in lending their voice to this growing and necessary movement.

At a time when students are forced to suffer in silence at the hands of failing schools, school choice options will provide students and parents with empowerment to choose a successful alternative. As an organization of educators, AAE is thrilled to be a part of the discussion and recognize the possibilities for teachers with school choice policies.

AAE Executive Director Gary Beckner noted in a recent op-ed, "A new era has been ushered in for education. Once limited to rigid traditional school terms and schedules, teachers are employed in traditional public schools, charters, private schools, religious schools, and online schools just to name a few. Educators will in turn have choices themselves when deciding when, where and how to teach kids."

It is AAE's hope that through our support of school choice week, we can educate and inspire other teachers across the country to make their opinions known. Teachers should not be the ones to stifle advances in education, rather embrace those policies that will ultimately bring opportunity and flexibility to educators.

Events ranging from town hall meetings to education documentary screenings will be held across the country this week. For School Choice Week resources and events, visit www.schoolchoiceweek.com.
